Balmain Regatta – Something Different…

Something Different

In the effort to offer something different to our ASBA members rather than interminable windward leewards, we are helping some great sports boat friendly events get the message out to our members.

The first event we are looking for us sport boats to gather at – is the Balmain Regatta in Sydney on October 29th. As some of you may know, this is the oldest regatta in Sydney with a mix of dinghies and yachts both classic and modern. Balmain SC have offered us a Sport Boat Division if we bring together a fleet of enough boats. With a good number of J70s west of the harbour we are already half way there.

The regatta consists of a ‘down the harbour’ pursuit race usually incorporating Cockatoo, Spectacle, Snapper and Goat Islands in the Western Harbour then heading under the bridge and around Shark and Clark Islands and Fort Denison. Start and finish will be off Balmain SC. There are ramps nearby for launching and retrieving at both Woolwich (Margaret Street) and Five Dock Bay. If you prefer lifting facilities, contact info@asba.org.au and we can put you in touch with Legacy Marina at Rushcutters Bay who may be able to help out.

After racing, there is a big BBQ open to all competitors at Balmain Sailing Club which spreads out to the waterfront park next door. You’ll also have a chance to see some of the vintage skiffs such the 10 footers and 18 foot historical fleet who always race. No doubt the famous 6 foot skiff ‘Balmain Bug’ will also be there.

The NOR is available now and Entries are Open see:  http://www.balmainsailingclub.com/balmain-regatta.

Please enter initially as “Super 30 Down Harbour Race– when it is clear we have enough sporty’s entered Balmain SC will split us out into our own Sport Boat Division.

Come along and enjoy one of Sydney’s great community regattas.
